Research may lead to retrofits to protect older buildings from quakes

University of California, San Diego, structural engineers have conducted simulated-earthquake tests that could help older buildings withstand earthquakes. Engineers subjected a three-story structure similar to those built in the 1920s to a series of different simulated seismic events. The tests were conducted on the world's only outdoor shake table at the school's Englekirk Structural Engineering Center.
