Companies whose future is based on the spread of Wi-Fi hot spots are pointing to the key role that 802.11-based technology will play, working side by side with 4G services, in taking the strain off bandwidth-hungry cellular networks. "It's interesting now to see Wi-Fi in five-year business models when they're doing network planning," said Jeff Thompson, CEO of Towerstream, which delivers last-mile service to enterprises via WiMAX networks.
