Some graduate students urged to consider nonacademic jobs

After two years of modest gains, job openings at colleges and universities for history faculty dropped 7.3% in 2012-13, according to the American Historical Association. The downturn in academic positions, based on a report of jobs posted with the association, mirrors those recently reported for English and other language majors as well as for economics graduates who hold doctorates. The American Historical Association is calling for graduate students to diversify their career aspirations and urging graduate programs to expand their training.
