Soaring fuel cost forces carriers to conserve

Major airlines are taking steps to conserve fuel. Alaska Airlines is updating its fleet with more fuel-efficient jets, and American Airlines is changing the tail cones on some of its planes to make them more aerodynamic. US Airways has instructed its pilots to change speeds to take advantage of tail winds and other conditions.
