Many illegal workers leave S.C. as state implements verification law

A new immigration law and the sluggish economy have prompted many illegal workers to leave South Carolina. Enforcement of the new law preventing employers from hiring illegal immigrants will not begin for another six months. However, this week, public agencies and contractors with government business must start using a federal database to verify employees.
