Mentors offer support for beginning teachers

Some new teachers in the Richmond, Va., area are participating in a Center for Teacher Leadership program at Virginia Commonwealth University that matches beginning teachers with full-time mentors who offer support and advice. "Preliminary data from the first cohort showed that teacher retention and Standards of Learning scores improved in schools with beginning-teacher advisers, especially in the second year," said Jan Tusing, teacher leader-in-residence at the Center for Teacher Leadership.
