New patent law protects design features

A law signed last month by President Barack Obama expands protections for distinctive design elements, such as the look and feel of Apple's iPad. The main goal of the legislation is to sync U.S. patent law with other countries so that inventors can submit the same design patent application to multiple countries, Jeff John Roberts writes. Some say the law could strain the U.S. Patent Office by inviting a flood of new applications.
