Nurses and caregivers are often called on to make rapid decisions in response to a patient's changing medical situation and should not be chastised for well-informed decisions to call a code, writes New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital pediatric hematology/oncology clinical nurse Aluem Tark. "Classifying a clinician's decision to call a code as unnecessary or labeling a decision to seek help as overreacting can very well put someone's life in jeopardy. In addition, it does not facilitate the process of having additional help available if it really is needed," Tark writes.
