For the first time since May, American Airlines is meeting with its flight attendants union in federally mediated talks this week. Similar sessions are scheduled for next week with unions representing pilots and mechanics. Flight attendant talks were halted for months, pending the outcome of contract votes by several work groups represented by the Transport Workers Union. Following a survey by the TWU, American said "changes made to work rules and benefits" were the main reason that mechanics and store clerks voted down new agreements last August. Meanwhile, talks with pilots have stepped up since last summer's leadership change at the Allied Pilots Association.
