Full-time security a critical component of the modern energy grid

Among the concerns facing utility executives in the age of the smart grid, cybersecurity continues to top the list. According to Terry Boston -- chief executive of the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection, a transmission group -- it's no longer adequate to think of security as an add-on feature; instead, networks need to be built and managed full time with security in mind. Meanwhile, industry standards such as NERC CIP 009 now call on utilities to perform regular exercises to test the strength of their security protocols.
