The future of GIS relies on increasing public use

The growth of GIS technology will depend on its widespread public availability, writes Firooza Pavri, an associate professor of geography at the University of Southern Maine. That means the industry must build innovative applications that deliver reliable data to help businesses. It also means increasing public awareness of the importance of GIS data to spur innovation and ensuring an adequate supply of properly trained workers, Pavri notes.
