IC production in China to grow with new Samsung flash fab

China wants to increase its domestic production of semiconductors for consumption by its electronics industry, and that goal is being bolstered by South Korea's approval of plans by Samsung Electronics to build a NAND flash memory fabrication plant in China. The giant Korean chipmaker will spend an estimated $4 billion on the Chinese wafer fabrication facility, which will make chips with linewidths of 20 nanometers. Production may start by the end of next year, although Samsung has yet to choose a site for the fab.
