Potter: Google-FTC settlement could help sideline "patent trolls"

A potential agreement between the Federal Trade Commission and Google could "limit the uses of injunctions when royalty negotiations around standard essential patents are unsuccessful," Application Developers Alliance President Jon Potter writes. Fixing issues involving standard essential patents is necessary to combat the continued innovation-stifling activity of "patent trolls" -- companies that target app developers and others with nuisance patent-infringement suits to extract quick settlements, Potter writes. "The software patent system is one of the greatest challenges that app developers face," he writes.
