Shell says Alaskan rig setbacks are not related to drilling

Setbacks related to Royal Dutch Shell's Discoverer and Kulluk rigs, which the company used for its Alaskan exploration activities in 2012, did not involve drilling, the company said. The Discoverer rig encountered propulsion difficulties, caught fire and was criticized for deficiencies in pollution control, while the Kulluk unit ran aground on Monday. "We are determined to learn from these marine transport issues and implement those learnings to strengthen our maritime fleet operations, going forward," said Shell spokeswoman Kelly op de Weegh.
