Observation is used more for pediatric ear infections

A short observation period to see if a child's ear infection resolves on its own before treating it with antibiotics is encouraged in some cases by the AAP and used by many pediatricians. The emphasis during that time is on pain control, and some physicians give parents a "safety net" prescription for antibiotics should the child's condition not improve.
