UBS tax-evasion informant could get lighter prison sentence

A former UBS banker who helped U.S. prosecutors pursue tax-evasion charges against wealthy Americans could end up with a lighter sentence. The Justice Department is considering whether to seek a reduced sentence for Bradley Birkenfeld in return for additional help from him, a senior government official said. Defense lawyers filed a motion last week asking Judge William Zloch to delay the start of Birkenfeld's prison term, saying he was prepared to give prosecutors more information.
