Google adds 217 patents to its intellectual-property holdings

Google bolstered its intellectual-property holdings with the acquisition of 217 patents from IBM, with most of them involving data-services technologies. The search giant acquired thousands of patents last year in an effort to build an effective strategy against potential litigation. A patent related to optimizing social networks for communications between people who share common interests is among the new additions.
