Teacher: Swimming lessons valuable for students with disabilities

Special-education teacher Pamela Gross Downing describes a 10-year-old program in which students in special education receive three weeks of adaptive swimming lessons and water therapy each year from first grade until they are 21- or 22-years-old. Besides enhancing students' physical skills, the program offers students a chance to practice their communication and social skills as well as their focus, Downing writes.
