In the winter, skin needs hydration, protection

Drinking extra water can help keep skin hydrated during dry winter months, but the extra moisture will evaporate in the absence of a topical moisturizer, says Alicia Zalka, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale. A broad-spectrum sunblock is as important in the winter as in summer, says dermatologist David Orentreich. "In the winter, ultraviolet light is 90% as strong as it is in the summer but since we can't feel or see it we mistakenly think it's absent," he said.
