Senators say AMT threatens middle class, call for repeal

Two Senate leaders -- Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, -- are calling for a repeal of the alternative minimum tax. The AMT, enacted in 1969 to ensure that wealthy Americans couldn't avoid paying taxes, now threatens millions of middle-class Americans, the senators say.
