Qantas Airways' discount division Jetstar has formed an alliance with Malaysia's AirAsia in an effort to pool expertise, reduce expenses and put pressure on rival Tiger Airways, which is backed by Singapore Airlines. The carriers will cooperate on passenger and ground handling in the Asia-Pacific region. "The aviation market in Asia is a growth market and has proven resilient over the past 12 months, despite the tough operating environment, with significant growth in passenger numbers forecast in the region," said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce. "This partnership will ensure that both airlines can capitalize on these growth opportunities."
