AAR: Carload, intermodal levels in 2011 end with growth uptick

U.S. freight rail carloads transported during the last week of 2011 rose 1.9% over year-ago levels, while intermodal surged 8.6% in the same period, according to the Association of American Railroads. Rail carloads for December climbed 7.3% year-on-year and intermodal gained 9.4% compared to December 2010 levels, the AAR said. While North American chemical shipments dropped 0.9% in the week ending Dec. 31, chemical carloads for the entire 2011 posted a 4.7% year-on-year growth, according to the AAR.
