How aquatic instruction can benefit students with disabilities

Weekly aquatic therapy is beneficial for many students who have physical disabilities or other special needs, says Tanya Miller, a physical therapist at Maryland's Cedar Chapel Special School, where the therapy is used as part of the physical-education curriculum. The aquatic environment allows students who may have muscle weakness or difficulties with mobility experience improved balance, functional ability and freedom from assistive devices, all of which have benefits that can be seen in the classroom, Miller writes.
