Protein plays a role in diabetes, heart failure connection

Heart failure stress activates the p53 protein, which then leads to inflammation in fat tissue, systemic insulin resistance and worsening heart function, Japanese researchers reported in Cell Metabolism. The results shed light on the prevalence of heart failure in patients with diabetes, the high insulin resistance rate in HF patients and why insulin resistance treatment bolsters prognosis in those with HF, one researcher said.
