Asian markets overcome volatility, selling pressure

Despite overnight losses in the U.S., Asian markets advanced today on continued hopes for an economic-stimulus plan from President-elect Barack Obama. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 Average climbed 0.4%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.5% and China's Shanghai Composite advanced 3%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Singapore's Straits Times Index both slid 0.4%, Taiwan's Taiex inched up 0.6% and India's Sensex was up 0.5% in afternoon trading.
