International effort to stop piracy might grow into effort to save Somalia

The failure of the Somalia state following a U.S.–backed Ethiopian military effort to shore up an illegitimate government against a popular Islamist group has resulted in unintended consequences that the world cannot tolerate -- in particular the dramatic rise in piracy off the Gulf of Aden. A coordinated international effort to patrol Somali waters and prevent piracy is being discussed as the foundation for a concentrated international effort to stabilize the Somali state.
