Fed officials are split on program for purchasing MBS

At their December meeting, officials at the Federal Reserve differed on how to proceed with a program of buying mortgage-backed securities. Some policymakers said an expansion of the program could be necessary, while at least one wanted to scale back the effort, according to minutes of the meeting Dec. 15 and 16. "Some participants remained concerned about the economy's ability to generate a self-sustaining recovery without government support," according to the minutes.
