Ind. district continues to address compliance issues

Improvements in educating students with disabilities in the Gary Community School Corp. in Gary, Ind., include implementation of response to intervention -- a system that identifies at-risk students and recommends appropriate interventions. Officials say the program has reduced the number of students referred to special education. Besides RTI, new special-education director Marianne Fidishin has implemented a system of checks and balances for suspension and expulsions and has plans to bolster child-screening efforts.
