5 biggest U.S. lenders increase their share of industry's assets

The concentration of assets in America's largest lenders, a process that began in 1990 when the five biggest firms controlled 9.67% of bank assets, is a process that is continuing to move forward, according to data from SNL Financial. The nation's biggest banks controlled 44.2% of the industry's assets in 2013, the data provider said. The total number of banks in the U.S. has fallen to the smallest number since the federal government started collecting the data in 1934.
