U.S. carriers will post profits in 2008, group says

Airlines will post profits of between $3.5 billion and $4.5 billion in 2008, according to the Air Transport Association. Revenue strength will offset a large jump in the cost of jet fuel, says ATA Chief Economist John Heimlich. He notes that carriers have quickly adjusted capacity and scaled back unprofitable flying to prepare for a possible slowdown in the economy.
