Retailers rush to renegotiate rents

Retailers, struggling with a downturn in consumer spending, are putting pressure on landlords to ease rents. "It's the best of times [because] landlords are trying to hold on to people like us," Gap chief executive Glenn Murphy told investors on a recent conference call. Some retailers are telling landlords they may go under if they are unable to renegotiate rents.
