United Airlines plans to lay off 140 ground workers this month, with another 100 employees shifting to part-time status. The job cuts will take effect as soon as Sunday, according to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. "This is a result of our overall reduction in capacity," said an airline spokeswoman, calling the layoffs "a difficult but necessary decision to ensure we have the right number of people in our operation."
