University of Nevada develops solar desalination system

A University of Nevada, Reno, researcher is working on a desalination system powered by solar energy. The solar pond and membrane distillation system offers a low-cost solution for desalinating lakes. "For every surface acre of solar pond, we can make three acre-feet of freshwater in about one year," said researcher Francisco Suarez, a doctoral student in hydrological sciences at the University.
