Educators debate merit pay for teachers in England

Officials in England have proposed the introduction of performance-based pay for teachers. However, the National Association of Head Teachers and Association of School and College Leaders, while offering some support for the plan, have noted that it could result in pay raises for some and reductions for others. The success of such a system, they said, depends, in part, on professional development and sensitivity.
