Irish publishers hope links help raise cash

A coalition that represents Irish newspaper publishers has launched an effort to begin charging online rivals for the privilege of linking to their content, claiming that unlicensed linking amounts to copyright infringement. The move -- which has drawn near universal scorn from media watchers -- was announced last week by the National Newspapers of Ireland. The NNI filed a motion with Irish regulators, asking the government to modify existing copyright law to include content that is linked to for commercial purposes.
