McAdam sees "billions" in revenue beyond phones

Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam said the wireless industry could reap "billions" of dollars by 2020 from new services, naming areas such as health care, cars and energy management in an interview. Also Monday, McAdam told an investor conference that Verizon Wireless netted a record 2.1 million subscribers in the fourth quarter, although he also said the parent company would incur a one-time charge of up to $10 billion in the quarter because of costs from Superstorm Sandy, pension obligations and restructuring debt. He also told the conference that Verizon favored backing three or four mobile operating systems in the name of diversity.
