Syria's Assad emerges, rejects mediation

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday publicly rejected mediation efforts led by Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations-Arab League envoy to the country. Assad instead proposed a "transition" to a new constitution and parliamentary elections only after the West ended support for opposition forces, which Assad said must disarm. Clashes resumed today throughout Syria.
