More mayors seek control over schools

A movement toward mayoral control of schools has gained traction since the 1990s, with some school systems switching from the traditional form of local governance. The California Legislature recently gave Los Angeles' mayor partial control over the school district, and he is appealing a ruling by a judge who last month struck down that law.
