Report: REITs lost 37.3% in 2008

REITs lost an average of 37.3% last year, according to a report released Wednesday by NAREIT. The best performers in the sector were self-storage REITs, which saw positive total returns of 5.1%, and health care REITs, which dropped just 12%. Commercial-mortgage REITs were the hardest hit, with average losses of 74.8%.
