December sales send out 2009 on high note

Same-store sales at U.S. retailers rose 2.9% in December, according to reports released Thursday, a sign that merchants did the right thing when they kept inventories lean and waited out the consumers. Last-minute shoppers hit the stores hard in the final days of the month, after holding off to see how low prices would go.
