A political crisis is unfolding in Nigeria, where President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has not been seen since he reportedly left the country to seek medical treatment 45 days ago. The President neither informed the legislature nor transferred executive authorities to his deputy, prompting critics to demand he submit some proof he is alive and leading humanitarians to consider sending a rescue mission. Nigeria's ambassador to Saudi Arabia reports Yar'Adua is well and recovering but will not say if or when he plans to return.
