Rental market continued to strengthen in late 2011

In the fourth quarter of 2011, U.S. apartment vacancies fell to 5.2%, the lowest level since 2001, according to Reis Inc. The drop is a sign that despite low mortgage rates, many Americans either can't get financing for a home purchase or are choosing not to buy. Usually, the fourth quarter is a weaker time for renting, Reis officials said.
