Scientists are monitoring emerging influenza viruses

In the wake of the 2009 influenza pandemic, laboratories all over the country began to monitor existing influenza strains and new ones. Although highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1 is known only to be transferred from birds to people who are in close contact, other strains, such as swine-origin influenza strain H3N2 may be more easily transmissible between humans.
