Japan's Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index each gave up 0.9%. Taiwan's Taiex and China's Shanghai Composite each slid 0.4%. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.7%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.6%. India's Sensex was up 0.3% at midafternoon.
