Declining feedstock costs coupled with soaring oil prices may be key for cellulosic biofuels to reach the market, writes Jim Lane. Based on industry data, feedstocks would have to be priced at about $50 per ton to make cellulosic biofuels competitive, Lane notes. The creation of a "strategic feedstock reserve" could help ensure a steady supply of low-cost cellulosic feedstocks, Lane states.
