Schwarzenegger brokers deal to ease state budget crisis

To help pay down a $14-billion budget deficit, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has negotiated a plan with education leaders that will increase per-pupil school spending by an average of $200 but will defer about $2 billion in extra money owed to schools. The spending proposal still needs to be approved by the Legislature.
