Disasters fail to deter most leisure travelers

Calamities such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina get a lot of media coverage, but The New York Times reports that they rarely diminish leisure travel to affected destinations. Leisure travel may even bounce back to levels higher than those seen before the disaster. The World Travel and Tourism Council's Ufi Ibrahim says that in the case of last summer's bombings in London, "it was almost as if people who stayed away after the bomb attack then decided to come back twice."
