Hotel add-on fees added up in 2006

The hotel industry increased revenue from add-on fees by 7% in 2006 versus the year before, generating a record $1.6 billion from such fees, according to Bjorn Hanson, a principal with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The fees are charged for services ranging from minibar restocking to resort amenities, and while Hanson said he believes travelers' acceptance of the fees is growing, some hotel-industry insiders say they fear there eventually will be a consumer backlash.
