Home-schooling parent to take reins of S.C. state board

Kristin Maguire, the chairwoman-elect of South Carolina's board of education, has home-schooled her four children their entire lives and co-founded an organization to advocate for the teaching of intelligent design and private-school tuition vouchers. Said board member Libby W. Swad, who nominated Maguire, "With someone like Kristin Maguire as the chair, we'll be able to make some politically courageous -- and probably unpopular -- decisions about what to do with education." Maguire will serve as chairwoman-elect this year and begin her duties as chairwoman in January 2009.
