Planting trees means considering that they will survive for many years, horticulturist Doug Courneya writes. "In my experience, the first thing homeowners ask for is something that will have good fall color, fast growth and sometimes, flowering," he writes. Instead, he argues, the first questions should be about a tree's maximum growth and its versatility, addressing the other qualities later.
